SUMMARY:Gould Piano Trio – CMS
DESCRIPTION:The Gould’s long-established reputation as one of our leading piano trios has been built not only on the quality of its music-making but also on the eclectic nature of its repertoire. \nThis is well illustrated by tonight’s programme\, which includes a work from 2012 by the respected Scottish composer Helen Grime and a delightful trio by the now completely overlooked 19th century German composer Heinrich August Marschner.

SUMMARY:Pittville Pump Room Comedy Club – November
DESCRIPTION:Age 18+ \nRemember\, remember it’s the 15th of November (doesn’t quite have the same impact of the 5th but you get what we’re trying to do here). \nThe only thing blowing up around here is more fantastic stand-up at our regular stand-up comedy club! \nNovember fun-fire-crackers are Steve Day\, Jules O’Brian\, David Arnold and compered by the fantastic Suzy Bennett! \nDo note that lines ups are subject to change. \nSteve Day\nSteve Day describes himself as Britain’s only deaf comedian\, if there are any others he hasn’t heard. Actually there are a couple of others who have started since he wrote that joke\, but it’s only a joke after all. \nFor the past eleven years Steve has been performing to huge laughter around the country and abroad\, well they tell him the laughter was huge to humour him\, he doesn’t know either way. \nSteve Day is a truly unique comedian – warm\, witty and engaging whilst dealing with the dilemmas of being a deaf man in a hearing world. Steve went on his first national tour back in 2006\, and has since been performing across the world to critical acclaim. \n“Revelatory and very funny” – The Guardian\n“Wonderful” – Bath Chronicle\n“Warm\, funny\, frank and thought-provoking” – The Scotsman \nSuzy Bennett\nFormer Butlins Redcoat and proud Devonian Suzy Bennett ‘accidentally’ won the prestigious Funny Women Award on her 6th gig and has kept the laughs\, and her Janner accent\, going strong ever since\, performing around the UK as well as overseas hosting large events as well as tour support for big name acts \nIn 2021 Suzy and fellow Plymouth Comedians launched ‘Plymouth Comedy Tours’ which has been selling out and receiving rave reviews on Trip Advisor which inspired them to create Christmas Special comedy tours which sold out like hot pasties! \nWinner of the Funny Women Award. \nTour support for Russell Kane. \n‘Suzy is Delightful company’ – Metro\n‘The physical presence and panache of a young Dawn French’ – Chortle\n‘Suzy is a Charm Bomb’ – Russell Kane \nDavid Arnold\nDavid Arnold has been a firm favourite of audience goers in the Westcountry and beyond\, with a smiley\, excitable delivery style that has everyone in stitches. In his ten years on the circuit he has shared the stage with some of the biggest names\, performed at world-renowned festivals and even starred in a summer season in Torquay! 2020 was a breakout year – he appeared in a Channel 5 documentary\, reached the final of the prestigious Beat the Frog in Manchester\, performed at the London Palladium and was crowned winner of the British Comedian of the Year for the South West Region. \nJules O’Brian\nBrummie-based Jules performs around the country\, telling anyone who will listen about ageing disgracefully\, body hang–ups\, parenting\, and dating. This former teacher’s relaxed\, chatty style\, crowd interaction and warmth\, all served with a sardonic wit\, make her a natural crowd-pleaser.\n“Funny as f” Mama Life Magazine\n“Splendid… a quality performance” Notts Comedy Review\n“Slick writing with a twinkle in her eye.” Scott Bennett \nPlease note\, a £2 ticket commission fee is included in the price of the ticket.

SUMMARY:Alban Gerhardt (cello) and Steven Osborne (Piano) – CMS
DESCRIPTION:After Schumann at his most romantic and the cascading emotions of Schubert’s lyrical Arpeggione sonata\, music inspired by the rhythms and cultures of Spain is prefaced by Debussy’s set of six pieces dedicated with great tenderness to his small daughter. \nWhen pianist Steven Osborne suggested a concert with his regular duo partner\, cellist Alban Gerhardt\, we knew this was an opportunity not to be missed.

SUMMARY:Carducci Quartet – CMS
DESCRIPTION:The acclaimed Cheltenham-based Carducci Quartet open the season with a programme of three completely different sound worlds. \nThey start the concert with Mozart’s ‘Hunt’ quartet which we have not had for many years. They follow with the emotional roller-coaster of the youthful quartet by Ravel. \nThe Carducci are renowned for their interpretation of the Shostakovich quartets\, and the evening ends with his infrequently played second quartet\, the weighty beginning of his mature quartet sequence.

SUMMARY:Pittville Pump Room Comedy Club – September
DESCRIPTION:Age 18+ \nWe’re back for another jam-packed Autumn season of monthly comedy clubs and cor-blimey\, have we got some fun for you! (Yes. Yes we have!) \nThis month’s comedy crackers are Matt Stellingwerf\, Katie Pritchard\, Jessie Nixon and topped off with a Sully O’Sullivan! \nDo note that lines ups are subject to change. \nKatie Pritchard\nGet ready for some high-octane musical comedy fun from carnage-wielding\, mayhem-manifesting\, human disco ball: Katie Pritchard. Expect incredible (very hand-made) costumes\, chaos\, and some pumping choons in a high-octane romp through Katie’s synapses; enjoy observational comedy from a completely different angle.\n“An explosion of joyful lunacy” (Shortlist)\n“Inventive and hilarious” (Broadway Baby) \nJessie Nixon\nShe has an impressive roster of achievements under her belt as third runner up in the Funny Women Stage Awards 2022 as well as BBC New Comedian of the Year Regional Finalist 2021\, Leicester Mercury Comedian of the year Nominee 2021\, and more! \nBetween her effervescent\, winning comedy\, and her growing list of accolades\, Nixon is an act not to be missed. \n‘She doesn’t remind me of anyone I’ve seen before\, which is a good sign. And she makes me laugh.’ Bruce Desseau\, Beyond The Joke \nHamilton-Born and Wangnui-raised farmer’s son\, trained criminologist and stand up comedian… Matt Stellingwerf is a man of contradictions. \nHe expertly brings these contradictions to the stage with his typical low-key style and confidence finding the humour in topics as diverse as love\, politics and a crazy interview he once conducted with a serial killer in Death Row! \nHighly regarded by his peers\, New Zealander Matt Stellingwerf has won four NZ Comedy Guild Awards\, including Best Newcomer. He is now UK based and respected nationwide by promoters and comedy venues. \nWhen this erudite satire-superstar gets onto the stage\, the acceleration from zero to a hundred jokes is measured in seconds. Matt Stellingwerf’s deftly crafted jokes display a man full of seriously good comedic talent. \n“Stellingwerf’s comedy is intelligent\, clever and thoroughly researched.. all of the while being really likeable” Libel \nSully O’Sullivan is a seasoned international headliner who has performed all over the world. First stepping onto the stage in his native New Zealand\, Sully rocketed to stardom making his TV debut just 7 months later in New Zealand’s cult stand-up series Pulp Comedy on TV2\, where he went on to appear in another three seasons. \nIn 2005 Sully decided to spread his comedy wings and head to the sunny coasts of Great Britain. Over a decade later and he’s now performed in almost every corner of the country including the Orkney Islands\, the Isle Of Man\, the Isle Of White & the Channel Islands! Basically there’s not many places in the UK that Sully hasn’t set foot. Renowned as an act capable of performing in any room and to any audience\, Sully has also built up a reputation as one of the most reliable and quick witted comperes on the circuit. \n“a wicked sense of humour” BBC\n“Sully O’Sullivan was amazing.” NME\n“engaging” The Scotsman\n“a blast of hilarity” Manchester Evening News \nPlease note\, a £2 ticket commission fee is included in the price of the ticket.

SUMMARY:England’s Finest
DESCRIPTION:The CSO is always delighted to be able to perform the best of English composers and this collection of England’s Finest is an opportunity to be relished. The concert includes two separate suites by Holst: The Perfect Fool\, a delightful ballet suite adapted by the composer from an earlier opera of the same name\, and a suite of Folk Songs from the “Lost Manuscripts”\, rediscovered in New Zealand and first performed by CSO in 2022. \nAlso included in this collection of England’s Finest is a work by Delius following his time living and working in Florida. The Florida Suite is inspired by the landscape and culture of the region and the orange groves in which he worked during that period of his life. \nNo collection of England’s Finest would be complete without a work by Edward Elgar\, and his Cello Concerto is considered by many to be his very finest. The CSO is delighted to welcome back Rebecca McNaught as the soloist for this performance. \nCheltenham Symphony Orchestra \nConductor: David Curtis \nHolst:                  The Perfect Fool (ballet suite) \nElgar:                   Cello Concerto \nHolst:                  Folk Song Suite \nDelius:                Florida Suite \nTickets: £20 and £17 inclusive of programme\, all reserved. DESCRIPTION:MOVED TO: Parabola Arts Centre\nFormed in 2017\, already multiple international prize-winners and BBC New Generation Artists in 2021-23\, the Mithras Piano Trio has quickly established itself as one of the next generation’s most exciting and accomplished ensembles. Praised for ‘exquisite phrasing’\, ‘full-blooded commitment’ and ‘bold\, passionate colours’\, their intriguing programme reflects their constant search for unjustly neglected repertoire. They will play the piano trio by Tailleferre\, Saint-Saëns’ first trio and Beethoven’s “Archduke”.

SUMMARY:Sir Stephen Hough Plays Dvorak
DESCRIPTION:Moved to Parabola Arts Centre.\n\nFollowing a sold-out Rachmaninov series\, Bristol Classical Players are delighted to welcome back international concert pianist Sir Stephen Hough\, to perform Dvorak’s beautiful and underrated Piano Concerto. \nOvershadowed by his Cello Concerto\, this lovely work gives full reign to Dvorak’s vein of fantasy and delight in the natural world. It speaks of the woods and wildlife of his native Bohemia\, alternating storms with passages of the most gentle stillness and reflection. \nThe concert begins deep in the woods too\, with the overture to Weber’s groundbreaking opera Der Freischutz; this mixture of love story and ghostly fable includes the still-terrifying Wolf’s Glen Scene\, and the overture conjures up its unique combination of joyous melody and spooky noises-off to perfection. Brahms’s mighty First Symphony\, nicknamed ‘Beethoven’s 10th’ at the time\, remains one of the greatest works in music history\, a masterpiece that Brahms perfected over more than 20 years’ work and which ends with a trombone chorale bringing the music into purest daylight.
