SUMMARY:Gould Piano Trio – CMS
DESCRIPTION:The Gould’s long-established reputation as one of our leading piano trios has been built not only on the quality of its music-making but also on the eclectic nature of its repertoire. \nThis is well illustrated by tonight’s programme\, which includes a work from 2012 by the respected Scottish composer Helen Grime and a delightful trio by the now completely overlooked 19th century German composer Heinrich August Marschner.

SUMMARY:Alban Gerhardt (cello) and Steven Osborne (Piano) – CMS
DESCRIPTION:After Schumann at his most romantic and the cascading emotions of Schubert’s lyrical Arpeggione sonata\, music inspired by the rhythms and cultures of Spain is prefaced by Debussy’s set of six pieces dedicated with great tenderness to his small daughter. \nWhen pianist Steven Osborne suggested a concert with his regular duo partner\, cellist Alban Gerhardt\, we knew this was an opportunity not to be missed.

SUMMARY:Carducci Quartet – CMS
DESCRIPTION:The acclaimed Cheltenham-based Carducci Quartet open the season with a programme of three completely different sound worlds. \nThey start the concert with Mozart’s ‘Hunt’ quartet which we have not had for many years. They follow with the emotional roller-coaster of the youthful quartet by Ravel. \nThe Carducci are renowned for their interpretation of the Shostakovich quartets\, and the evening ends with his infrequently played second quartet\, the weighty beginning of his mature quartet sequence.

SUMMARY:Verona Quartet - CMS 2023/24
DESCRIPTION:MOVED TO: Parabola Arts Centre\nPrize-winners at the 2015 Wigmore Hall String Quartet Competition\, the American Verona Quartet are making their first return to the UK since their competition success. Their varied programme combines Mendelssohn’s youthful first quartet\, the best-known quartet (no.4) by the Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz and Beethoven’s final quartet op.132; it strikes the perfect mood for the final concert of the CMS season.

SUMMARY:Mithras Trio - CMS 2023/24
DESCRIPTION:MOVED TO: Parabola Arts Centre\nFormed in 2017\, already multiple international prize-winners and BBC New Generation Artists in 2021-23\, the Mithras Piano Trio has quickly established itself as one of the next generation’s most exciting and accomplished ensembles. Praised for ‘exquisite phrasing’\, ‘full-blooded commitment’ and ‘bold\, passionate colours’\, their intriguing programme reflects their constant search for unjustly neglected repertoire. They will play the piano trio by Tailleferre\, Saint-Saëns’ first trio and Beethoven’s “Archduke”.

SUMMARY:Sir Stephen Hough Plays Dvorak
DESCRIPTION:Moved to Parabola Arts Centre.\n\nFollowing a sold-out Rachmaninov series\, Bristol Classical Players are delighted to welcome back international concert pianist Sir Stephen Hough\, to perform Dvorak’s beautiful and underrated Piano Concerto. \nOvershadowed by his Cello Concerto\, this lovely work gives full reign to Dvorak’s vein of fantasy and delight in the natural world. It speaks of the woods and wildlife of his native Bohemia\, alternating storms with passages of the most gentle stillness and reflection. \nThe concert begins deep in the woods too\, with the overture to Weber’s groundbreaking opera Der Freischutz; this mixture of love story and ghostly fable includes the still-terrifying Wolf’s Glen Scene\, and the overture conjures up its unique combination of joyous melody and spooky noises-off to perfection. Brahms’s mighty First Symphony\, nicknamed ‘Beethoven’s 10th’ at the time\, remains one of the greatest works in music history\, a masterpiece that Brahms perfected over more than 20 years’ work and which ends with a trombone chorale bringing the music into purest daylight.

DESCRIPTION:MOVED TO: Parabola Arts Centre\nPrize-winners in 1997 in the London International String Quartet Competition\, the Belcea Quartet are one of the world’s leading chamber ensembles. Their programme includes Beethoven’s quartets op.18 no.4 and op.127 and Bartok’s first quartet. The Belcea’s complete recordings of these two composers attracted enormous critical acclaim and we are very fortunate they have made time in their touring schedule for this overdue return to Cheltenham.

SUMMARY:Romantic Reminiscences... from Brahms\, Elgar and Dvorak
DESCRIPTION:Cheltenham Symphony Orchestra \nConductor: David Curtis \nBrahms\,   Academic Festival Overture \nElgar\,   Sea Pictures    Emma Roberts – mezzo-soprano \nDvořák\,   Symphony No.7 \nThe CSO opens its 2023-24 season with an eclectic collection of reminiscences in orchestral form. \nBrahms takes us back to student days with the ever-popular Academic Festival Overture\, inspired by the raucous drinking songs so popular with students of the time. \nA collection of five poems evoking the varying nature of the sea were set to music by Edward Elgar as a collection of songs in his Sea Pictures for which the CSO will be joined by mezzo-soprano soloist\, Emma Roberts. \nDvořák’s Symphony No.7 is a powerful reflection on the struggles of the people of his Czech homeland and is considered by many as Dvořák’s finest symphony. \nClick here to book.
